On March 16, 2022, Vatrano was traded by the Panthers to the New York Rangers in exchange for a conditional 2022 fourth-round draft pick in an effort to clear cap space to acquire another defenseman. The Rangers on the other hand, acquired a player who could improve their bottom six forwards and could score.
