Former First Lady of Honduras who helped form the National Front of Popular Resistance after her husband, then-president Manuel Zelaya, was removed in a military coup. She unsuccessfully ran for President in 2013.
She earned a degree in Business administration despite not attending university. She was very active in creating programs for families while living in Catamacas, Honduras.
Her social focus continued as first lady, working with programs aimed at women living with HIV. While she did not join her husband in exile, she lived with him after he returned to the country and was taken in by the Brazilian embassy.
She and Zelaya got married in 1976.
She lost to Juan Orlando Hernandez in the 2013 election.
