After playing for Otago from 2008, Wagner moved north and joined Northern Districts in 2018. He finished his career with Northern Districts in 2025. His final game was against Otago, where Northern Districts won and as a result won the Plunket Shield for the first time since 2012.
Wagner took five wickets and said of the game "Yeah, cherry on the top, like it's just, couldn't have asked for a better ending. Plunket Shield is one of the only things I've never been able to achieve as a team, and to do that in your last game here is definitely a tick off the bucket list and a pretty special day.
